Charleston County Library Shows Works by Kevin Reed

The exhibit, Ghettofabulous, featuring work by Kevin Reed will be on view at the Saul Alexander Gallery located in the Charleston County Library's Main Branch in Charleston, SC, from Oct. 2 - 29.

Reed's artwork involves color pencils, cloth, type, paint and ink. Whatever idea he has in his head he usually tries to find the medium that fits it and believes that he has gotten his point across that way.

Reed says his life as an artist has been affected by his environment. Of his work he states, "I have constantly seen images good and bad of my African-American people. I was not placed on this earth to judge but I feel that I should create artwork that is truthful. I cannot create artwork that only praises our black achievements without acknowledging that prosperity has not reached all of my people. I hope by God's grace that I can tell a fair story of African-Americans. I hope that one day I can be seen as an artist that has given society a full view and better understanding of African-Americans."

Reed's work has been selected twice as the Mayor's Purchase Award during the City of Charleston's annual Moja Arts Festival. He has also won a top merit award in drawing at the SC State Fair Fine Art Exhibit in Columbia, SC, and has participated in the Dimensions 1999 National Art Competition in Winston-Salem, NC.
