In the early twentieth century the exploration of art apart from nature was taken to a new level by Pablo Picasso and George Braque. After 1907, they asserted the principle that the figure or still life subject could be transformed into a series of flat color planes. From this "cubism" it was only a short step to total abstract arrangements of line and color. In 1937, the "American Abstract Artists" group was formed in response to the growing number of artists who had embraced abstract painting. The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City was founded on the concept of non-objective paintings and sculpture.

This exhibition and sale will consist of a selection of modern and abstract works by artists who first came of age during the formative years of American abstract painting. With the arrival of the twenty-first century, these paintings now belong to a distinct period in the past and may therefore be appreciated from a historical perspective.

Walter Palmer

The "one and only" Walter Palmer is Hilton Head Island's most engaging sculptor. It has been over twenty years since Palmer's last one-man exhibit here on Hilton Head. For many years, Palmer has created whimsical and enchanting sculptures featuring his signature "pelicans" in various, if not, hilarious poses for a multitude of private collectors and commercial properties from around the world.

On exhibit will be newly released limited editions including In Tune, What a Pair, Incomplete Angler and Nest Egg. Several unique "one-of-a-kind" outdoor sculptures will also be introduced.
