Tryon Painters and Sculptors Host Ways With Wood

The Tryon Painters and Sculptors of Tryon, NC, host a new exhibit, Ways With Wood, on view through Nov. 7. This exhibit will present a different experience for regular gallery visitor accustomed to seeing works in oil, watercolor, acrylic, and or clay. Three artist, Joyce Ruess, Pauline Tennant, and Bernard Van Vlaenderen, use wood in different ways to express their artistic vision.

Joyce Ruess, Sculpture, of Hendersonville, is a self-taught sculptor from Canada whose art reflects her love for wildlife and the environment. She is a member of the Tri-State Sculptors Guild and is an International Associate of the National League of American Pen Women. Her work has been exhibited in regional and national juried shows in which she has won numerous awards, She is a 1999 recipient of the Regional Artist Grant Program.

Pauline Tennant, Wood Cuts, an Asheville printmaker, has worked in advertising art in New York and taught in art in public and private schools. She was the recipient of a 1995-96 Emerging Artist Grant from the North Carolina Arts Council and Art Alliance. A founding, and current member of the Asheville Gallery of Art, she has exhibited widely in the area and in New York. She has won awards on the local, regional, national, and international levels.

Bernard Van Vlaenderen, Intarsia, has been a Tryon resident since 1997. He retired from the Los Angeles Community College District after 35 years as Professor Emeritus in Mathematics and having served in many areas of Administration. Since coming to Tryon he has been active in the Tryon Crafts as a teacher and board member, and in Tryon Little Theater as a set builder. At an early age Van Vlaenderen became interested in woodworking as a woodcarver, and eventually into scrollwork and intarsia, a style of decorative or pictorial inlay involving a mosaic of woodpieces.
