Charleston County Public Library in Charleston, SC, Offers Exhibition on Artist's Books

The exhibition, The Print Studio South Art of Bookmaking, will be open to the public throughout the month of Oct., 2002, in the Saul Alexander Gallery, located on the first floor of Charleston County Public Library system's Main Branch, in downtown Charleston, SC.

The purpose of this exhibition is to expand the exposure of the artist's book, a form of art not well known to the general public but adaptable to many artist needs, to various audiences in the Charleston area. Artist's books defy easy categorization. As an art form, the artist's book has existed for more than 100 years without occupying a readily identifiable niche, in part because they vary so widely, but also because they tend to require an intimate and personal viewing experience not easy to cultivate in a museum or gallery setting.

Due to the wide variety of forms and purposes that can characterize the artist's book, and in part because they are so often personal, artists' books have increased in popularity over the past two decades with artists and viewers alike. This call for entries exhibition will bring artist's books from across the country and around the world.
