Hodges Taylor Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Carolyn DeMeritt

Hodges Taylor Gallery in Charlotte, NC, proudly presents an exhibition of photographs by Carolyn DeMeritt, titled Portraits. The exhibition will be on view Oct. 4 - Nov. 30, 2002.

Through the years DeMeritt has continued her interest in using portraits as the vehicle to a better understanding of the human being and all the complexities therein. This is serious work where the artist achieves power through restraint. A necessary balance must be found between the camera's eye, controlled by the artist, and the unique attributes of each sitter. As Ken Bloom wrote, "Carolyn DeMeritt makes discoveries in people and great photographs of their spiritual and corporeal selves." She captures the complexity of being human. These portraits are evocative and haunting.

DeMeritt has won national acclaim for her films shown at the San Francisco International G/L Film Festival as well as the One World Screen Fest in Vancouver, Canada, for her landscapes and for her portraits. Her works are found in museums and public collections across the region.
