Christa Faut Gallery in Cornelius, NC, Offers Works by Ray Kleinlein

Christa Faut Gallery in Cornelius, NC, will present the exhibition, Recent Paintings, featuring oil paintings on canvas by Ray Kleinlein from Oct. 6 through Nov. 16, 2004.

Kleinlein attended Columbus College Ohio of Art & Design as an undergraduate student and Ohio University (Athens, OH) as a graduate student where he mastered the style and technique of arranging the setting for dramatic lighting effects creating the lavish surfaces of baroque still life painters. He developed his own style by using everyday common objects, such as cardboard boxes, elegant shopping bags with names like Saks, stacks of toilet paper, pillows, paint cans, coffee mugs and other similar objects. One could call these still lifes pop art with humor, beauty and minimalistic clarity. These works are both realistic and brilliantly abstract. Kleinlein's oil paintings capture all the richness and humor.

Kleinlein offers the following statement: "The subjects I paint are not the seductive objects of desire most commonly found in still life. They are objects that we encounter daily but which are so unremarkable that they are usually overlooked. The elevation of such seemingly unworthy subjects to the status of art is often unexpected, sometimes humorous, and even at times, disconcerting. Though the objects are chosen for their formal rather than symbolic qualities, the subjects rarely remain neutral. Ironically, it is the neutrality of my paintings that leaves them open to interpretation. It is always interesting for me to hear the personal associations viewers bring to banal subjects (a corrugated cardboard box, for example) and what feelings the work then evokes. Ultimately my work is about the simple act of looking at the overlooked and the pleasures derived from seeing ordinary things in an extraordinary way."
