North Carolina Quilts Exhibition at the Folk Art Center in Asheville, NC, Features Quilts from North Carolina

The Southern Highland Craft Guild presents 150 Years of North Carolina Quilts: Selections from the Pattie James Royster Collection at the Blue Ridge Parkway's Folk Art Center in Asheville, NC, from Oct. 2, through Jan. 9, 2005. This exhibition of historical and traditional quilts celebrates the ingenuity, individuality and beauty of quilts made for daily use.

Organized by The Gallery of Art & Design at NC State University, this traveling exhibition of 20 quilts was selected from a collection given to the university by Dr. A. Everette James, Jr. and Dr. Nancy Farmer in memory of his mother, Pattie Royster James, who was a quilter. Dr. James started to collect quilts by attending local county fairs and planned to collect quilts from all 100 North Carolina counties.

Exhibition curator Robert Bryan made his selection based on "quilts that showed bravura in craft, elements of elegance in the raw material selections, or intriguing patterns. The truly outstanding quilts also demonstrate improvisation within the context of established patterns and traditional use." The quilts range in age from a "whole cloth" quilt circa 1820-1830 to a Log Cabin quilt made ca. 1960. In between, quilts with names like Rob Peter to Pay Paul, Sprocket, Drunkard's Path, Joseph's Coat, Tumbling Blocks and Winding Blades display the personal adaptations of their makers. There are also variations of star
patterns, Irish Chain and Crazy Quilt designs.

A public program, Quilt Day, will be held at the Folk Art Center on Nov. 7 from 1-5pm. Bring your quilt and join experts Georgia Bonesteel and Kathy Sullivan to learn about identifying your quilt's design and provenance. Fee to be announced.

The Southern Highland Craft Guild is a non-profit, educational organization established in 1930 to bring together the crafts and craftspeople of the Southern Highlands for the benefit of shared resources, education, marketing and conservation.
