The Mint Museum of Art in Charlotte, NC, Offers Artists' Forum Series

Area Artists discuss their work as well as current issues and activities in their artistic fields at the Mint Museum of Art in Charlotte, NC, in the Artists' Forum Series. Each talk is followed by an informal reception and the opportunity to meet the artists and visit the museum's galleries.

On Oct. 5, 7:30-9pm, woodturner Charles Farrar and sculptor David Greenwood find hidden beauty and transform chunks of wood into works of art. Farrar will talk about the properties of wood and focus on the medium as "art canvas." Enjoy the tactile experience of the textured surface of his latest series, entitled Hammered Wood. After retiring from a management career with Bell South in Charlotte, Farrar now lives and creates in southern Virginia. Farrar's woodturnings are represented by Noel Gallery in Charlotte. He is an enthusiastic spokesman for fine craft, the craft tradition and artistic inspiration.

David Greenwood, artist-in-residence at McColl Center for Visual Art, also works in wood to create sculptures of boat forms, dwellings and animals. Greenwood, a professor at Kendall College of Art & Design in Grand Rapids, MI, has exhibited extensively in the Midwest and Yugoslavia. In Charlotte he plans to research local architecture and Carolina boat designs for inspiration for his sculptural work. Influenced by international folk art, his sculptures of animals are allegories for humans in crisis.

This program is co-presented with The Charlotte Links Chapter and the Crown Jewels Chapter of The Links, Inc. as well as McColl Center for Visual Art.

On Nov. 2, 2004, 7:30-9pm, nationally known Myrtle Beach, SC, painter Alex Powers talks about his watercolor portraits and the influence of Andrew Wyeth on his work. For 30 years Powers has painted and taught workshops throughout the United States and Canada. His book Painting People in Watercolor presents a fresh approach to portrait and figure painting. He exhibits his work internationally and is represented by eight galleries.

On Dec. 7, 2004, 7:30-9pm, investigate Bob Trotman's figurative sculpture and Peggy Rivers' gestural paintings.
