Moring Arts Center in Asheboro, NC, Features Works by English Potter, John Calver, English Potter

English potter John Calver will be showing his stoneware pottery from white stoneware clays in the Main Gallery of the Moring Arts Center in Asheboro, NC, beginning Oct. 4 and continuing through Oct. 29, 2004.

Calver studied Civil Engineering at London University and worked in that field before discovering clay through an adult education class. In 1981 he began making stoneware, work that he continues to the present. Calver is also a distinguished teacher and presenter of workshops. He was the subject of a cover article in Ceramics Monthly in 2000.

Many of Calver's forms are altered dynamically while the clay is soft. Techniques in decoration include chattering, impressing fabric, rope and clay stamps, and brushing, trailing, inlaying and sponging slips onto the surface. Up to six overlapping layers of glaze might appear on any one piece.
