The Sylvan Gallery in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Ted Ellis

The Sylvan Gallery in Charleston, SC, will present the work of Ted Ellis, the Heritage Arts Festival's 2002 winner of the Palette Award For Impressionism, as part of the Sixth Charleston Fine Art Annual weekend. The exhibition open on Nov. 5, and continues through Nov. 30, 2004.

Commissioned by the New Orleans Multicultural Tourism Network to create their first official collectors' edition artwork and recognized by Black Heritage Art, Inc. as Artist Of The Year in 1997, Ellis has developed quite a following!

Ellis's work is in a realistic style combined with impressionism that manifests in a primitive style reminiscent of folk art. These slices of life utilizing rich colors embody the celebration of culture and heritage as a common theme. With a white church often present in his paintings, he returns often to religious imagery, as church was his foundation from early life as it so often is in southern life. The nostalgic memories of childhood are stories, with a sense of the viewer being there, present in the story. Ellis says, "I paint subjects that are representative of the many facets of American life as I know it. I like to think of myself as a creative historian. I was put here to record historyall aspects of American culture and heritage. My sole purpose has always been to educate through my art."

Ellis grew up in New Orleans. This backdrop is the platform for the rich cultural heritage in his work. He is self-taught and his paintings document his reverence for and celebration of the traditional values of his culture. This is the life he has led.

Ellis, who currently resides in Friendswood, TX, has work in corporate collections including Walt Disney Studios, Coca Cola, Avon and Philip Morris.

The Sylvan Gallery is the newest member of the Charleston Fine Art Dealers' Association which created the Charleston Fine Art Annual six years ago to promote understanding worldwide of Charleston's place as an arts' destination.
