Art League of Henderson County in Hendersonville, NC, Features Works by Beth Engel and Janet Kagan

The Art League of Henderson County will honor two artists, Beth Engel of Hendersonville, and, in memoriam, Beth's mother, Janet Kagan, in the exhibit, Metronymics: A Mother/Daughter Show of Paintings, in the Grace Etheredge Room at Opportunity House in Hendersonville, NC. The exhibit will be on view from Oct. 2 - 31, 2005.

Engel and her husband moved to Hendersonville in 1997 after living for four years on a boat in the Caribbean. They chose Hendersonville because of its art activities. Trained in design at the University of Illinois, and in painting at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Engel has spent many years as a commercial designer. Her painting interests have "always been in the human figureprobably as a result of dedicated people-watching on public transportation in Chicago."

Presently Engel is painting in acrylics, human figures and some experimental abstracts and landscapes. She has shown her work in galleries in the US and the British Virgin Islands.

Engel's mother, Janet Kagan, moved to Hendersonville in 2001 after a lifetime of practicing her art in oils, watercolor, casein, and acrylics in Chicago, San Francisco, and Miami. Her subjects progressed from portraits to street scenes and vistas of San Francisco. In the early 1990's, under the spell of Raoul Dufy, her work drew upon "the beauty and visual delight of whatever she could round up-most often florals and still lifes." Kagan was looking forward to this mother/daughter exhibit. She died of cancer last December.
