Brunswick Arts Council Holds Fundraiser at Sunset River Marketplace in Calabash, NC, Nov. 19, 2005

Tickets went on sale today for the Brunswick Arts Council 2nd Annual Evening of Miniature Masterpieces fundraiser, which will be held at Sunset River Marketplace in Calabash, NC, on Nov. 19, 2005. The cost is $99 per ticket, which includes the evening's gourmet hors d'hoeuvres buffet, wine, entertainment and an original "miniature masterpiece." For one dollar more, the ticket holder may bring a guest, so essentially the tax-deductible evening costs $100 per couple.

Proceeds from the evening will be used to fund the many art programs the Arts Council provides to the citizens of Brunswick County. Tickets may be purchased at Sunset River Marketplace, 10283 Beach Drive, SW in Calabash. Call 910/575-5999 for directions. Checks should be made out to Brunswick Arts Council.

The theme of the event, now in its second year, has been met with great enthusiasm in the local artist community as well as among the public. The Arts Council contacted local and regional artists and asked them to donate a 4-inch by 4-inch piece of original art, which would be then given to ticket holders. Over 150 pieces of art have been donated. According to Arts Council president Dariel Bendin, last year's event was very successful and the 2005 gala promises to be even better.

"Cordon Bleu, a terrific catering company in Southport, is providing the buffet, so we know it will be great. We'll also have fine wine along with micro brew from Zachary's American Grille, which is a sister restaurant to Front Street Brewery in Wilmington" Bendin said. "A new addition is the dance floor, so people will really be able to have a great time." The evening's entertainment is being provided by Shamalama, the Myrtle Beach, SC, group known for beach and shag music, jazz and contemporary pop. Local singer-songwriter Calabash Flash will be on hand to lead some line dancing.

Last year's title sponsor, the Star-News, is back and co-sponsoring with Carolyn Felton/Banc of America Investment Services, Inc, who was also a major sponsor for the 2004 fundraiser. Coastal Printing and Graphics in Shallotte, NC, is once again providing printed materials for the event. Sunset River Marketplace, who provided the venue and all framing and art services, has stepped up once again for the Council. Brunswick County Parks & Recreation Department and Security Savings Bank in Calabash are returning sponsors as well. This year, the Brunswick Beacon and Waccamaw Bank in Shallotte, NC, are being welcomed as new sponsors. The group hopes to name several others before the event in November.

Brunswick Arts Council is a nonprofit organization with an all-volunteer board of directors. Its goal is to develop and promote art programs for children and adults throughout Brunswick County." Bendin added, "Art can make a huge difference in someone's life whether it's a school program at the elementary level, a nursing home's senior program, a traveling art exhibit or a free concert. The more funding the Brunswick Arts Council has, the better the job we can do for the community." As a direct result of last year's fundraiser, the group has been able to increase the funding it provides to other organizations, and is in the process of developing new programs designed to bring more artistic programs into the classroom.

Bendin credits support from Waterway Art Association, Associated Artists of Southport and the Oak Island Art Guild with the overwhelmingly positive response from local artists. The donated art pieces are in a wide range of media including oil, acrylic, watercolor, mixed media, pastel, turned wood, clay, quilting, graphite, charcoal, intarsia and hand blown glass. Event goers will discover the artists all have interesting stories to tell.

Artists who contributed works for this event include: Sharlene Ackley, Fay Ahuja, Jack Anderson, Eunice Andrews, Helga Beacham, Betty Bee, Ramona B.
