Hilton Head Art League's Art Academy on Hilton Head Island, SC, Celebrates Second Anniversary with Exhibit

The Hilton Head Art League's Art Academy on Hilton Head Island, SC, celebrates its second anniversary on Oct. 4 with a tribute exhibition of works by Suzanne McCullough Plowden. The exhibition and sale continues through Oct. 31, 2005. The exhibition and sale continues through Oct. 31, 2005. Plowden has donated the works in the exhibit to the Academy, to raise funds for the cause.

The Academy offers workshop courses in a variety of art mediums, all taught by local artists. Artists and would-be artists can take classes meeting once a week over a period of 4-9 weeks, or attend special interest, one time only classes on topics such as framing, precious metals/clay, collage, or ceramics. The classes attract tourists as well as local residents.

Plowden is best known as a portrait artist. Since moving to the Lowcountry, however, she's painted numerous seascapes and marsh scenes. Over the years, she and her twin sister Lucerne, had traveled the world, painting portraits of the rich and famous, done fashion illustrations for magazines like Vogue and Harpers, and taken on commissioned murals for the US government.

Plowden's work is in private collections around the world and in the US Embassy in Brazil. "We are so pleased that Suzanne has donated some of her fine work to the Art Academy," says John Norlander. "Her generosity is greatly appreciated and will make for an exciting anniversary celebration. We hope everyone will come to see these outstanding works of art. They are all for sale and the proceeds will benefit current and future artists."

The Hilton Head Art League is a not-for-profit membership organization, dedicated to promoting the visual arts inn the community and increasing the art skills of its members. It provides weeklong workshops with nationally renowned instructors at the Disney Studio at the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina, art classes at the Art Academy, scholarships to graduating high school senior pursuing careers in the visual arts as well as art events throughout the year. It maintains a gallery in Pineland Station for the display and sale of artwork by its members.
