Brunswick Arts Council Offers Annual Fundraiser in Calabash, NC, on Nov. 18, 2006

The Brunswick Arts Council is busy gearing up for its third annual Evening of Miniature Masterpieces, the group's major fundraiser of the year. It will take place on Nov. 18, 2006, from 6:30-10pm, at Sunset River Marketplace art gallery in Calabash, NC. The event, which people now look forward to each year includes: a scrumptious spread of heavy hors d'oeuvres and delicious desserts; fine wines and brew; dancing; music in the form of Jazz, Blues & Beach Music by Three Cool Cats; silent auctions; a live auction of original artwork; and a free "Miniature Masterpiece" for each ticketholder.

Dariel Bendin, event chair, said, "This event just keeps getting better. The artwork this year is extraordinary." There are pieces coming in from nationally known artists such as Kevin Beck and Sterling Edwards. Locally, Susan Mauney, Susan Dade, Vic Gillespie, Joan Sanders and Ramona Bendin are some of the better known two dimensional artists contributing works. There will also be fine clay art by Jane Truesdale, Rebecca Pierre, Cindy Weaver and Brian Evans. Studio 12, an artists' collective that meets and paints at Sunset River Marketplace has provided some of the most imaginative pieces. Dick Staat's art class in Southport, NC, also donated several pieces: Rooster Emerson has been working in negative space, and it's beautiful. Phyllis Riley's work wins awards every time she picks up a brush. And Elsie Jordan's exquisite still life pieces take my breath away.

"Jill Hope and Judy Rickenbacker of Kaboo Jewelry are again donating a piece of stunning, artisan-made jewelry to be auctioned," adds Bendin. For cat lovers, Jane Staszak, Betsy Parker and Angela Alexander have each created something special. Dori Roberts donated a breathtaking watercolor of the beach houses along Sunset Beach. Nancy Marshall of Walls Fine Art Gallery in Wilmington, NC, has given us a moving miniature portrait titled The Shawl. Scott Summerfield has donated a beautiful hand blown glass sconce for auction, and Babs Ludwick has donated a large abstract painting, also for auction.

Other auction items include two original paintings by former Arts Council president, Victor Gerloven, who passed away in June of 2005. They are being donated by his wife Jeanne Gerloven, who serves as Secretary for the Arts Council.

Bendin says the Council is also receiving a good deal of corporate and individual support for the fundraiser. Carolyn Felton of Banc of America Investment Services, Inc. has been a major sponsor since the beginning. Coastal Printing and Graphics will once again provide printing services for the event's catalog, invitation and other materials. Sunset River Marketplace is, as it has in the past, providing the venue and all framing services free of charge. The Star-News and The Brunswick Beacon are returning as print media sponsors. Pyramid Engineering, Security Savings Bank, Waccamaw Bank, Clarice Holden/Island Breeze and Icon Marketing are all returning sponsors. Photographer Brad Monteforte is also donating his services for the event.

New this year are Doshier Design, which is providing graphics for all advertising and printed materials; Mason & Ann Anderson; Brunswick Community Hospital; Mr. & Mrs. Trippe Sloan; Allan Dameron Realty; NC Senator R. C. Soles, Jr.; Sea Trail Corporation; Allstate Insurance; David Redwine/Coastal Insurance; Thomas B. Guitierez-CPA; Mark Saunders/Ocean Ridge Plantation; McCallum & Assoc.; and Seaside Piggly Wiggly.

Brunswick Arts Council is a nonprofit 501 (c) (3) organization, the mission of which is to promote art and artistic endeavor throughout the County for the benefit of Brunswick County citizens. It partners with the North Carolina Arts Council to distribute Grassroots Art Program funding to local nonprofit organizations, which provide programs that include: multicultural, visual, performing and literary programs. For fiscal year 2005-06, Brunswick Arts Council provided funding for Associated Artists of Southport, Brunswick County Parks & Recreation; Brunswick Concert Band, City of Boiling Springs Lake, Friends of the Library/Hickmans Crossroads Branch, Friends of the Library/ Leland Branch; Greater Holden Beach Merchants Assoc., Oak Island Art Guild, Oak Island Senior Center, Ocean Ridge Singers, Sea Notes Chorale, South Brunswick High School and Waterway Art Association.

Another program of Brunswick Arts Council is its annual Individual Artist Grants. Last year there were six recipients including a young man who was recording through interviews and photography, the life of his grandfather, who was in the final stages of Alzheimer's disease. Another recipient was using visual art to explore and express the domestic violence in her family. Other recipients used their funding for workshops, materials and equipment necessary to achieve their professional goals. This year, nine recipients will receive Individual Artist Grants.

Brunswick Arts Council has just implemented a Memorial Scholarship in honor of the organization's late president Victor Gerloven. It will be awarded each year to a graduating Senior in Brunswick County who is pursuing a college major in the Arts or Education.

In the year ahead, Brunswick Arts Council is seeking to bring increased multicultural programming, literary activities and live performances to the area. Proceeds from the Evening of Miniature Masterpieces will benefit these many programs.

Tickets cost $99 per person. For one dollar more, ticket holders can bring a second person, so essentially it's $100 a couple.
