October Issue 2006

Dog Art Dealer in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Faith Cameron Semmes

Dog Art Dealer in Charleston, SC, is presenting the exhibit, Scotties, featuring works by internationally known artist Faith Cameron Semmes. The exhibit continues through Oct. 21, 2006.

Semmes, one of the country's most talented realistic oil portraitists of canines, was thrilled to meet two shining examples of solid white, and solid black Scottish Terriers - Archibald Campbell, Duke of Argyll and Kilwhillie of Kilchurn Castle, owned by Mr. and Mrs. Joe Kilingensmith. Similar to most ambassadors of the breed, they were ideal models for Semmes' new series of Scottie paintings.

The paintings are quite serious, as well as superbly charming. The individual portraits of the two Scotties are in keeping with Semmes's favorite artist, Caravaggio, as she illuminates her "saintly" subjects with a holy light. Her contrast of light and shadows has a wonderfully dramatic effect in these paintings. The two paintings of the dogs playing with a red ball perfectly capture the tension of a tug of war game and the determined spirit of the breed. Semmes has sealed her fate as one of the country's best canine portraitists.

Semmes was born in Charlottesville, VA. She attended the Maderia School and Hollins College where she majored in Visual Arts. After college, her love of animals and long interest in equestrian sports inspired a five year foray in Animal Sciences. During this time, she worked as a veterinary surgical nurse in both small animals and equine practices. Semmes has lived in Charleston since 1993.

Semmes is a member of the American Society of Portrait Artists. She has had exhibitions in Charlottesville, VA, and Edgartown on Martha's Vineyard, MA.
