Appalachian State University in Boone, NC, Offers Works by David Newton and Althea Murphy-Price

Appalachian State University in Boone, NC, is presenting two exhibitions at the Catherine J. Smith Gallery featuring sculptures and drawings by David Newton, on the first floor gallery and lithographs and sculptures by
Althea Murphy-Price, on the second flood gallery, on view through Nov. 21, 2007. Both exhibitions were curated by gallery director and assistant professor, Jody Servon.

Servon states, "I am intrigued by the innovative ways both of these artists use materials such as, synthetic hair, sponges and light bulbs, and transform them into objects ripe with multiple meanings. Their works are inventive, witty, and humorous, but at the same time they question our environment, identity and contemporary culture."

Both Newton and Murphy-Price will visit the campus during the exhibitions to install and discuss their works with students and community members. After visiting the gallery and studying the space, Newton created a site-specific work that will be housed in the atrium of the gallery. Murphy-Price will install two additional works, she describes as "hair rugs" in the gallery on Oct. 4, which will remain in the gallery until the exhibition closes.

Althea Murphy-Price received a MFA from Tyler School of Art, Temple University in Philadelphia. She is currently an assistant professor of printmaking at the Indiana University Bloomington School of Fine Arts. Her work has been featured in exhibitions at venues including: Print Center Gallery and Artforms Gallery, both in Philadelphia; Artspace Gallery, Richmond, VA; Turchin Center for the Visual Arts; and Art Consortium of Cincinnati, OH.

David Newton was born in California and lives in works in Greensboro, NC, where he is an assistant professor of sculpture at Guilford College. He received a MFA from Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, NY. Newton's work has been featured in exhibitions throughout the US and China and has been included in publications such as Art New England and the Boston Globe.
