Asheville Area Arts Council in Asheville, NC, Offers Three New Exhibitions

The Asheville Area Arts Council in Asheville, NC, will be presenting three new exhibits on view from Oct. 5 - 30, 2007. The exhibits include: an exhibit of works by Hank Fuseler and Bill Whipple in The Front Gallery; photographs by Carlos Cardona in The Back Gallery; and paintings by Skip Rohde in The Boardroom Gallery.

Hank Fuseler is a self-taught painter born in Columbia, SC. While experimenting with photography he performed volunteer work for Gallery 701 in Columbia. During this period he began to paint under the influence of Aiken, SC, artist Hollis Brown Thornton. Subsequently, he moved to the New Jersey shore where he acquired his first studio. Since then he has executed nine one-man shows and participated in numerous group exhibits. Fuseler moved to Asheville, NC, in 2005 and now shows work in North and South Carolina. His paintings are in collections throughout the US.

Bill Whipple began making furniture in rural West Virginia over 18 years ago. Now in North Carolina, he continues to be influenced by nature's imperfections to create his own unique style of furniture. Whipple strives to make art from his heart and is constantly bombarded with ideas and inspirations by the curves, twists and holes from each piece of wood he uses while focusing on the marginal and making a concerted effort to reclaim cast-off materials and re-use wood. Whipple is a one man operation: from the log selection and preparation of lumber, to design and construction, to marketing and sales. He is also a Grovewood Studio Artist.

A fascination with technology combined with a strong aesthetic has fueled Carlos Cardona's interest in photography since his first jet-flight out of Cuba at the age of 8. Through his extensive travels as an adult he grew to resonate with and profoundly appreciate the beauty and exquisite power of moving through space and time, the majesty of light and serene splendor or metal against cerulean sky. This show highlights his fascination with air travel and terminals - the place where the adventure beings.

After retiring from the US Navy in 1999, Skip Rohde earned a BFA from UNC-Asheville, graduating in 2003. The "Meditation on War" series by Rohde examines the effects of war upon people and the land. "These paintings are a result of my own experiences with combat and military life," states Rohde. "Not much is said about what is left after the fighting is over. There's a stillness that speaks to us in stark contrast to the violence that once took place there." With a studio in the River District, he focuses on painting, but also works in printmaking and photography. This exhibit is independently curated.
