Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County in Camden, SC, Features Works by Philip Hultgren and Marti Boykin Wallace

Three-dimensional works by Camden artists Philip Hultgren (wood) and Marti Boykin Wallace (ceramics) will be on display from through Oct. 15, 2007, in the Bassett Gallery at the Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County in Camden, SC.

"The work of these two artists is a perfect fit for a show together," said Julie Trott, exhibit curator. "The exhibit will embrace a natural splendor by juxtaposing a cool earthiness of the clay against a fine honing of the woods."

Marti Boykin Wallace

A native of Kershaw County, Marti Boykin Wallace can trace her love of pottery back to her childhood watching potters at Historic Camden back in the Craft Show days. Despite this fascination growing up, she did not attend a ceramics class until 1991.

"I was instantly hooked," said Wallace, "and have been focused in clay ever since. I have always been attracted to simple forms with graceful curves and an inviting surface."

Wallace describes herself as "basically a self-taught potter" who developed her skill through perseverance. Most of her pottery is made to be functional, intended to be used rather than displayed on a shelf. For Wallace, "utility is important, but not at the expense of beauty. Nor should beauty inhibit the use of a pot."

Philip Hultgren

Philip Hultgren is an artist working in wood in downtown Camden. Apart from the initial instruction and encouragement of his grandfather, he is self-taught.

Hultgren's work explores the harmony that exists naturally in trees. His pieces incorporate various aspects of the whole tree such as ingrown bark, rot, termite damage, and grain.

"These multiple elements, while very different, live and work collaboratively in a single life form we recognize as a tree," said Hultgren. "I believe humanity can learn a great deal from a tree."

Hultgren has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States, and has been named as an alternate for the 2007-2008 Individual Artist Fellowship Awards by the South Carolina Arts Commisssion.
