Artists Guild Gallery of Greenville in Greenville, SC, Features Works by Diana Pursch

The Artists Guild Gallery of Greenville in Greenville, SC, will present an exhibit of works by guest artist, Diana Pursch, on view from Oct. 1 - 31, 2008.

Early in life, Pursch had a great love of nature with all its beauty. That love was further nurtured as she learned to value the beauty of the world around her and the wonder of its simple pleasures. She now draws from these life's lessons to paint her meditative Sumi-e art.

Fascinated with the flow of water and blending of colors on paper, Pursch decided to explore the art of Sumi-e, which is a Japanese word that means "ink picture." She found it a disciplined and calming art filled with rituals that strangely set her creativity free. That, combined with her love of nature, color, texture and the discipline needed to study the art seemed perfect for her total well being.

Commenting on her own work, Pursch says, "Sumi-e for me is like life; it's a beautiful flowing circle. My work flows from my heart to my head to my hand. When I begin a piece, I never know how it will endit just does and just like life it is complete, a flowing circle. For me, every amazing step of both life and my work in Sumi-e is filled with wonder, surprise and much to learn."

The art of Sumi-e originated in China about 6,000 years ago as calligraphy. Calligraphy led to painting. The first ink painting on silk dates to about 200 BC. During the Southern Sung Dynasty (AD 1127-1276), great advances were made in the styles of painting that emphasized a direct feeling for life and spontaneity in the brushwork. It was also at this time that Zen Buddhist monks took ink painting to Japan and other parts of Asia.

The Artists Guild Gallery of Greenville is a co-operative gallery located in the heart of downtown Greenville. Over twenty local artists are represented in the gallery along with various mediums including acrylic, mixed media, oil and watercolor paintings, jewelry, glass, woodwork and sculpture. One or more of the artists is in the gallery at all times, demonstrating throughout the day and always ready to discuss their art with visitors.
