Blue Ridge Arts Council in Seneca, SC, Offers Works by Steve Garner

The Blue Ridge Arts Council in Seneca, SC, is presenting the exhibit, Dreamscapes, featuring works by Steve Garner, on view through Nov. 12, 2009.

Garner moved to the Upstate in the 1990s and is originally from North Dakota, where he received both Bachelor and Master of Fine Arts degrees. He is well-known throughout the region for his surreal fantasy fish series-bass or trout swimming above the forest floor; titled Trout in Trees.

"I tend to think like a printmaker when I paint," he says. "Thinking in terms of layers helps me bring order to a complex process." His choice of paint is Holbein Acryla gouache, an acrylic which allows him to create layers of wash. Garner also uses airbrush, ink erasers and watercolor pencils to complete his dreamy scapes.

Although a full-time art teacher in the Greenville, SC, schools, Garner rarely goes more than a week without having, what he calls "a flame", an urge to paint yet another subject. The artist has won many national awards and is a member of the South Carolina Watermedia Society and the Society of American Graphic Artists. A work by Garner also took second place award in the 2006 Blue Ridge Arts Council Juried Show.
