Caldwell Memorial Hospital Art-in-Healing Gallery in Lenoir, NC, Features Works by Eleanor Hughes

Caldwell Memorial Hospital Art-in-Healing Gallery in Lenoir, NC, will present the exhibit, Forced Evolution, featuring works by Eleanor Hughes of St. Augustine, FL, on view from Oct. 1 through Dec. 25, 2009.

Breast cancer was the impetus for this artwork - from The Wake Up Call to The Sojourn to Beyond the Fire, Hughes shares the experience as her perspective has been altered. As a survivor, she appreciates every moment of the gift of life.

Hughes offered the following statement, "My inspiration to paint comes from my environment, my experiences, my dreams, my family and friends. I am not interested in painting in a photorealistic way, but as an emotional response to what I see, feel or imagine. I want to communicate with color, line, and form to create a language that goes beyond words. At the same time it becomes a personal experience that can be exhilarating as well as frustrating, longing to say something that cannot be easily defined. The struggle to make art that has its own life incorporates my own perception of events, thoughts, and emotions."

"I learned a lot about myself from painting the Forced Evolution series," adds Hughes. "When I did the paintings almost five years had passed since my breast cancer diagnosis. Time had given me a bit of distance and I was able to look somewhat objectively at what transpired during this interlude. When I started I only knew that I wanted to communicate something positive and encouraging to people going through an intense emotional and physical experience."

"When I exhibited these paintings for the first time I was surprised and very touched to find out how good it felt to share my story."

The Art in Healing Gallery is located just inside the Mulberry Street entrance to Caldwell Memorial Hospital in Lenoir. The exhibits are sponsored by the Caldwell Arts Council.
