Lark & Key Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Flora Bowley and Paula Smith

Lark & Key Gallery in Charlotte, NC, is presenting the exhibit, The Nature of Things, featuring new works from Flora Bowley and works by featured potter Paula Smith, on view through Nov. 1, 2009.

Flora Bowley

Flora Bowley is an emerging Northwest painter known for her strong use of color, subtle mark making and multi-layered paintings on canvas as well as smaller works on bamboo. Inspired by both urban and natural settings, Bowley currently lives and works as a full time painter in Portland, OR, where she is surrounded by cityscapes, lush forests, changing seasons and a multitude of tiny living things.

Bowley finds purpose in the very act of relating objects and colors to one another and allowing stories to unfold, drawing the viewer in again and again, revealing something new each time. Her paintings are not meant to be answers or conclusions; rather they are a celebration of the present moment, chaotic, beautiful, subtle and ever changing.

Paula Smith

Paula Smith has been working as a ceramic sculptor for the past 30 years, focusing mainly on narratives; telling stories through the use of female imagery, including the torso, the archetypal house form, and the vessel. She is also interested in the use of Milagros, small charms of various body parts, sacred hearts or other objects of importance to daily life.

For The Nature of Things, Smith has created functional pieces incorporating these ideas along with more organic references such as flowers and leaves. Her whimsical interpretation, of teapots and cups for instance, are often playful in a Dr. Seuss kind of way. Smith believes that enjoying food is to enjoy "the whole experience", the hand-made meal, the hand-made dishes and the soul of the artist.

Smith is currently a ceramics instructor at CPCC in Charlotte, NC.
