Picture This Gallery on Hilton Head Island, SC, Features Works by Don Moore

Picture This Gallery on Hilton Head Island, SC, will present the exhibit, Photographer Storyteller, featuring works by renowned photographer Don Moore, on view from Oct. 7 - 31, 2009.

Moore is known as a photographer storyteller, a modern day adventurer whose travels have taken him around the world, recording images for National Geographic, Discovery, and the Outdoor Life Network. Working on assignment and bringing back images from far-flung places many of us would never get a chance to see.

Moore began making photographs when he was nine years old, using a simple light transfer system given to him as a Christmas gift. In the 1950s, he went into television production, working for NBC and later moving to CBS. Moore began as a cameraman and became a Producer and Director of documentaries and live television events that have defined history, including the live landing of Neil Armstrong on the moon.

Moore's desire to photograph was always with him. "Soon I was carrying a camera with me to the television studio because I was meeting so many interesting people there as well as seeing new places while working at remote locations," Moore explains.

Picture This Gallery presents Moore's photography in a sweeping exhibition of images from a lifetime pursuit of people and their stories. "This show is a collection of ideas and memories collected during my life travels. These photographs are part of who I am. The images are places that have left dust on my shoes or grew in my mind until I could capture them. Many of the people and animals were in strange and wondrous places South America, India, the outer islands of the British Isles - where I, an intruder, invading their lives trying to capture the essence of the place, the people and their difficult lives doing hand work to share with readers of Wild Fibers magazine," Moore said.

Moore now lives in a small fishing village in Maine, and works as an independent filmmaker and photographer. Lately, his interests have turned to the Lowcountry, its land and seascapes as well as the people who call it home. Images from the exhibit include Early Morning Wait, a lone rider in silhouette quietly astride his horse, prior to the Marsh Tacky horse races on the mud flats of Mitchellville.

Another image, worlds apart, shows a couple partaking in afternoon tea, ancient pot and utensils on colorful fiber blanket in a bazaar near the Equator.

"Don's work is that exceptional mix of documentary with art. He has the unusual capacity to blend into the background that is required in order to capture the moment. It's a rare treat to exhibit someone with his credentials, history and diverse body of work," said Mira Scott, owner of Picture This Gallery.
