October Issue 2009

Treasure Nest Art Gallery in Mt. Pleasant, SC, Features Works by Karen Burnette Garner

The Treasure Nest Art Gallery in Mt. Pleasant, SC, will present the exhibit, Lowcountry V New Works by Karen Burnette Garner, on view from Oct. 24 through Nov. 30, 2009.

The exhibition continues Garner's tradition of creating lowcountry landscape paintings, with over 30 new original works in acrylic on canvas shown. This will be the fifth solo show in what has become a highly anticipated annual event for area collectors.

Garner, a Georgia native, has been represented by The Treasure Nest Art Gallery since 2002. Her studies with mentor John Baden-Nuttall and the late Al Brouillette have helped the artist bring the Carolina lowcountry to paint and canvas. Her works have been characterized as impressionist and realist in style, and she credits the influence of master painters Ray Ellis and the late Paul Strisik in the development of her interpretations of the lowcountry marshes and tidal creeks. As Garner says, "These master painters understood the importance of light, composition, and touching the heart of the viewer."

One strong theme of this year's show is the reflection of the lowcountry landscape in all its moods - serene afternoons, flaming sunsets and moonlit evenings. Roads and paths are also a recurring theme, inviting the viewer to imagine what else might be just around the next turn.

Garner reflects, "My personal experiences of roaming the lowcountry have shown me that there is always something to be seen that is unexpected, or intensely beautiful, each time you venture beyond the beaten path. A turn down a sandy track can reveal a swaying vista of marsh grass, reaching for miles, or a palmetto stand sheltering tiny crabs waving their claws. An iron gate teases the viewer to wonder what is beyond it. As a painter, I strive to capture those images in my work. It is a great source of personal pleasure to know that collectors appreciate these images as well, and choose to include them in their living environments. I frequently meet with collectors who have a particular vista they enjoy, and it is a privilege to bring that image to canvas for them."

Garner's works have been avidly collected by art connoisseurs worldwide. Her clients include AT&T, Wachovia, Thomas and Hutton Engineering (Myrtle Beach), Chateau Elan Winery, Holston Valley Hospital, University of Georgia, and Mr. Larry "Chipper" Jones of the Atlanta Braves. She is also a published illustrator and award-winning poet, recently published in The Reach of Song, a yearly anthology of verse.
