Caldwell Arts Council in Lenoir, NC, Features Work by David Spear and Doug Davis

The Caldwell Arts Council in Lenoir, NC, will feature American photographer David M. Spear's Mexican artwork and three- dimensional work of local artist, Doug Davis in the gallery Jan. 4 - 25, 2002.

Spear's Mexican collection, which will be on display, captures the spirit of Mexico. Each black and white photograph tells a story and captures in detail life in Mexico. One of the portraits in the collection, Old and New, features a Mexican man in the middle of "no where" with his livestock, talking on a cell phone. This photo captures the brink of change Mexico is teetering on.

Spear was named a 1994 Guggenheim Fellow and in 1995 won a North Carolina Artist Grant. His book, The Neugents, published by Jargon Press in 1993, received critical reviews throughout the United States.

Spear's photographs are in collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York; The Houston Museum of Fine Art; the New Orleans Museum of Art and countless other museums throughout the southeast.

Doug Davis is a Caldwell Arts County artist, trained at Appalachian State University. He received his Bachelor of Fine and Arts, Studio Art, and is teaching in Caldwell County. He has received much acclaim for his work. His current work is three-dimensional sculpture, both wall hung and freestanding.

Greer Laboratories Inc. and Foothills Framing are sponsoring the exhibit and Acapulco Restaurant, Mi Pueblo Restaurant and Centro Latino, Inc. are sponsoring the opening reception.
