City Gallery in Charleston, SC, Presents Works by Marni Rothschild

The City Gallery at the Dock Street Theatre in Charleston, SC, will present an exhibit of photographs by local artist Marni Rothschild from Jan. 8 through Feb.5, 2002 entitled Up.

Marni Rothschild was raised outside of Washington, DC, and has worked and lived in both Charleston, SC, and Richmond, VA, since 1997. She became interested in the subject matter conveyed in her recent work while earning her Masters Degree in Photography at Virginia Commonwealth University in 2001. Her influences range from contemporary urban architecture, American pop culture, and photo- graphs from the Russian Constructivist movement. In addition to previous exhibits in Charleston, Rothschild's photography has been shown in Washington, DC and Alexandria, VA.

Rothschild comments on her work, "Photographs are often presented as documents of reality, and display our surroundings from an eye level point of view. Images that fall into this category conform to common expectations of perception and perspective and do not exploit the unique traits of the media - notably, to truthfully represent three-dimensional, vertical space in two dimensions. I enjoy the effect created by pointing a camera straight into the air and then reproducing the same scene on a flat surface to be displayed from another angle. Doing so purges concrete information from the image such as horizon lines, orientation and references to scale, and working with ambiguous forms contributes to the abstraction of the original subject. I prefer to work with subject matter that is somewhat unfamiliar and unrecognizable so the viewer may contribute his or her own interpretation to each view. The ambiguity of space and subject in this series is a metaphor specifically intended to reference dreams, memory, and perception.
