Church Street Inn Gallery in Charleston, SC, Features New Works by James M. Sulkowski

The Church Street Inn Gallery in Charleston, SC, is proud to feature for the month of Jan., 2003, recently completed oil paintings by nationally acclaimed artist James M. Sulkowski. The addition of these major works gives the gallery one of the largest collections of Sulkowski originals in the country.

Sulkowski's work is recognized worldwide. He was born in Pittsburgh, PA. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art of Carnegie Mellon University and with Frank Mason at The Art Students League of New York.

Throughout his career, he won numerous national honors including the Helen DeCozen Award for Best Floral Painting at the American Artists' Professional League's 64th Grand National Exhibition in New York. One of his images was selected by North Light Publishing for their book, The Best of Flower Painting. He also was invited to exhibit with the Artists' of America show in Denver. His work was featured in several national magazines, including American Artist, INFORMART, Art Trends, and Civil War Times Magazine. The president of the National Arts Club in NYC calls him "one of the great artists of America"

Over the past 20 years, Sulkowski's work has been collected by presidents, royalty, and major institutions, including the Metropolitan Opera. In an effort to share his knowledge, Sulkowsik established the Sulkowski Academy of Fine Arts in 1994. In addition, he regularly conducts workshops throughout the country, including the Scottsdale, AZ, Artists Schools and now here, in Charleston.

Sulkowski's painting combines a philosophy and science along with his art. His subject matter is nature. He attempts to reveal the universal and the beautiful elements in the world around us. The son of a dentist, he uses his knowledge of science in preparing all of his own materials by hand. He grinds his own paints from powdered pigments in oils and varnishes which he painstakingly prepares. He also consults Renaissance formulas, making his own gessoed panels. This emphasis on the craft of painting is essential to Sulkowski's art. Only in this way is the artist able to control the consistency and vitality of his medium. These methods of the masters also contribute to a work of art with lasting value and permanence and one that is timeless.
