ElderArt Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Offers Preview Exhibition of the 2003 Season

ElderArt Gallery in Charlotte, NC, will provide a sneak preview of six artists who have recently joined the gallery's roster. Leonel Matheu, Gina Gilmour, Karen Roberson Powell, Jill Jones and Tom Perkinson will be featured in upcoming exhibitions at ElderArt during 2003. The exhibition entitled, Four Shadow Plus Two, will be on view from Jan. 3 through Feb. 22, 2003.

Cuban-born painter Leonel Matheu is scheduled for a one-man show in Sept. During this special preview, the gallery will exhibit four paintings by this internationally-known artist whose work provides a dramatic narrative of the continuing struggle of man against the destruction of the natural world. Matheu arrived from Havana in 1988 and has made Miami Springs, FL, his home. His family was the subject of an HBO movie, For Love or Country, starring Andy Garcia.

Gina Gilmour is a Charlotte native who has spent most of her adult life painting and exhibiting her art in New York City. She currently maintains studios in both Manhattan and Charlotte. Gilmour will participate in a two-person show at ElderArt during Nov.

Karen Roberson Powell has recently moved from Dallas, TX, to Marshall, NC. She received her MFA at the University of North Carolina in Greensboro with a concentration in sculpture. She has studied in Italy, Wales, and England as well as at the Academy of Realist Art in Santa Fe, NM, and the Carving Studio in Proctor, VT. ElderArt will preview her bronze sculptures during this show. Powell will participate in a two-person show at ElderArt during Nov.

Spartanburg, SC, artist Jill Jones will exhibit her unique pastel and charcoal drawings during the exhibit. A number of works from her Southern Series will present her view of the landscape from a native Southerner's perspective.

Tom Perkinson of New Mexico is nationally known for his beautiful impressionistic oil paintings. Perkinson strives to communicate his personal artistic statement clearly, through painting scenes that celebrate the beauty and innocence of life. When describing his paintings Perkinson uses words such as light spirited, romantic, idealistic, innocent, carefree and simple times.
