Here's a Carolina Arts Update! 7/22/05

erl originals gallery in Winston-Salem, NC, is now closed. The following is no reflection on the artist(s) mentioned in this article. They still deserve the historical fact that this exhibition happened.

Here is an excerpt from an article in the Winston-Salem Journal's Dec. 10, 2004, edition: "In late September, (2004) erl's owners, Peter and Lee Swenson, and the company they operate, Bogart Management Group, were foreclosed on by their bank. They were barred from their gallery at 480 West End Blvd. for being months in arrears on rent and utilities. Peter Swenson is facing numerous tax-fraud charges, as well as a growing number of civil lawsuits filed by creditors seeking to collect payments they say are long overdue".

ERL Originals in Winston-Salem, NC, Offers Paintings by Anne Boysen

Works by Anne Boysen, a well-known creative and versatile artist specializing in landscapes and flowers, will be on display at ERL Originals in Winston-Salem, NC, from Jan. 9 through Feb. 10, 2004.

Boysen is known for her remarkable flair for experimentation. Her landscapes and flowers explore paths both impressionistic and abstract, and she applies a full palette of colors to work of compelling moods that range from exuberance to quietude.

"These days I am painting impressionist landscapes and abstracts," explains Boysen, "but I continue to experiment, and my work takes many turns. I hate detail, so what you see on the canvas is not meant to be real but a statement, an essence. I've been painting a long time, yet every time I stand in front of a new canvas, I feel like a kid in a candy shop."

A lifelong Pennsylvania resident who has lived mostly in Philadelphia, Boysen has studied at Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia College of Art, and Temple University (Med.). Over the last two decades, her work has been featured in numerous local, regional, and national juried shows, including the Fellowship of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. She has had more than a dozen one-person shows, won a number of awards, including several first and purchase prizes, and been named a Liquitex Artist of the Month. In 2002, she was named to the Contemporary Whoís Who.

Boysen's paintings hang in more than 75 major corporate, financial, and healthcare institutions - among them DuPont, McGraw-Hill, Dean Witter Reynolds, JP Morgan, Fox Chase Cancer Center, Lehigh-Portland Cement, Wachovia Bank, and Pfizer Drug. Her works are also on display at a number of universities in the northeast.

"Painting is my life, my work, and my fun. I am compelled to paint," says Boysen. "For me, it is almost an unconscious act: My paintings paint themselves. I love color, and I love to make a mess. Sometimes I put paint on the canvas only to scrape it off. Much of my inspiration seems to come from a deep love for nature and for music. I've always been happy out-of-doors."
