Beaufort Art Association in Beaufort, SC, Offers Works by Carol Newsome

Poems are made by fools like me, but only God can make a tree. - Joyce Kilmer

"I think of Joyce Kilmer's poem every time I paint a tree," says Carol Newsome, who is the Beaufort Art Association's featured artist from Jan. 3 through Feb. 12, 2005.

Newsome is well known for her expressive Angel Oak watercolor (2000) on the exhibit's posters. Visitors to the new show, at the Port Republic Street gallery, can expect more Beaufort trees, including The Old Bay Street Oak, well known to Beaufortonians.

Newsome, who had worked in retail for 24 years, discovered her talent eight years ago. "I was inspired by my sister in Michigan. She is a watercolor artist. First I just 'messed around,'" said Newsome. She then took workshops from local watercolorist, Gloria Dalvini and now paints several times a week. At least one day a week is spent painting with a group of artists from the Beaufort Art Association. "I have a wonderful feeling when I paint,' she explains. "It's just what happens when you create."

During the six week feature at the BAA Gallery, Newsome will exhibit over a dozen of her watercolors. In addition to tree "portraits" the show includes landscapes, still lifes and a few architectural pieces such as Newsome's Old Seabrook Barn and a local church.
