Hollis Brown Thornton Featured in Exhibits in Columbia and Aiken, SC

City Art Gallery of Columbia, SC and Jackson Gallery & Sculpture Garden of Aiken, SC are proud to announce the Hollis Brown Thornton dual exhibition entitled, Great Sea Creatures & Punica Granatum. The City Art show opens Jan. 7 and continues through Mar. 5, 2005. The Jackson Gallery & Sculpture Garden show opens Jan. 20 and runs till Mar. 17, 2005.

South Carolina native, Hollis Brown Thornton, returns from Chicago, IL, for a dual show across the state. Thornton, a Bachelor of Fine Arts graduate of the University of South Carolina, will install over a 100 pieces in City Art Gallery and Jackson Gallery & Sculpture Garden. The shows will consist of a chronological installation of Thornton's signature 10 x 10 inch paintings.

Thornton's work is concept driven based on "our inability to understand fully our surroundings." Thornton explains, "The viewer has to rely on knowledge and understanding gained from personal observation, science and reason, and religion and faith."

Like our never-ending quest for knowledge, Thornton's work contains a searching and discovering progression. The earlier paintings focus on the texture of the paint and the look and feel of the surface, each canvas having a raw, unfinished appearance. The series develops into imagery driven compositions based on scientific and religious symbols.

Thornton's 10 x 10 inch and large-scale works will be available for purchase at City Art and Jackson Gallery. Thornton's work is an excellent addition to any collection or a great way to begin collecting.

Hollis Brown Thornton currently resides in Chicago, Illinois. In 2004 he has exhibited in shows in Chicago and Aiken. He participated in Wim Roefs' show, South Carolina Birds: A Fine Art Exhibition at Sumter Gallery of Art in Sumter, SC. Thornton last showed his work in Columbia in the 2003 The Felt Moment exhibition at the Columbia Museum of Art in Columbia, SC.
