Upstairs Gallery in Tryon, NC, Offers Exhibit by Women Artists

The Upstairs Gallery in Tryon, NC, rings in 2006 with a major exhibit, New Faces/New Year, featuring works by 12 women artists, 10 of whom are showing at the contemporary art gallery for the very first time. Many of the artists fit the description of "emerging" while others are undeniably established. The exhibit will be on view through Feb. 18, 2006.

Painting in oil, acrylic, watercolor and mixed media are Bonnie Bardos, Saluda, NC; Nikki Caulk, Spartanburg, SC; Mary Charles Griffin, Bridget Risdon and Heidi Zednik, Asheville, NC; Linda Hudgins, Mary Ann Merrill and Ann Weiler, Tryon; Lynne Tanner, Rutherfordton, NC; Joy Vaughan, South Bristol, ME. Karen Roberson Powell, Marshall, NC, sculpts primarily in bronze while Molly Eckerd, Charlotte, NC, uses papier-maché as her main medium.

Much of the work in New Faces is abstract - in styles that might suggest a landscape, could be labeled minimalistic or surrealistic, or are composed of fluid and intensely colorful patterns. There is also exciting figurative work.

Exhibit organizer Ann Weiler says, "The best thing about the show is the incredible new talent we're introducing to the area. It's a great feeling to be able to discover and showcase so many artists who are doing such fine and innovative work." Weiler believes this is an exhibit that will appeal to, and stimulate, all visitors to the gallery.

The gallery conducts its popular "Walk & Talk" tour of the art led by the artists on Jan. 15, 2006, at 2pm.
