January Issue 2009

Genetics Center in Greenwood, SC, Features Works by Christopher Rico

The Greenwood Genetics Center in Greenwood, SC, is presenting the exhibit Paintings 2008, featuring a dozen paintings, most large in scale, by Christopher Rico, on view through Jan. 10, 2009.

Rico offers the following statement about his work, "Painting, I believe, is most relevant when it has a sense of place. This needn't be tied to, or representative of the natural world; indeed I do not consider my own work to be so. Yet it still must maintain this strong sense of placeof being. While I may avoid clear narratives or literal descriptions, I cannot deny that each picture is certainly imbued with a physicality, a location either of my experienced or imagined wanderings."

"I can only say of my colorforms that they have slowly become the foil against the churning, undulating fields of earthen tones and abstracted suggestions of light in my pictures. They at once create the landscape and in that same moment deny its literal read. In mixing a very classic color palette with a high modern one, I try to push this contrast. One should always be conscious of the illusion."

A book has been published of Rico's work entitled, Christopher Rico | paintings 2008, it is available through a link at (www.christopherrico.com).
