Works by Tjelda vander Meijden at Wynne Hatfield Gallery

The Wynne Hatfield Gallery in Charleston is featuring Tjelda vander Meijden's Southern Lights oil paintings on Nov. 3 from 5.30-8.30pm. The paintings of Umbria and Venice, Italy, and Middleburg Plantation, SC, were completed over the last year and vividly show vander Meijden's mastery of light and color using the "en plein air" technique.

Named by a Santa Fe, NM, art critic as his "discovery of the evening" during a Charleston French Quarter Art Gallery Walk, vander Meijden moved to Charleston four years ago to explore the visual similarities of the Lowcountry and the old world of her native Europe. She was trained in the classical traditions of painting, drawing and intaglio at The Academy of Design and Fine Art in New York City, and she combines the best of her old world Dutch heritage with the cutting edge of New York's 20th century art movement. Vander Meijden first distinguished herself in the field of botanical art, and she later returned to landscape paintings done on location, called plein air.

During the last 20 years, vander Meijden's botanical prints and paintings were featured in major shows and in the permanent collection of the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, the Readers Digest Permanent Collection, the Bag Regal Resort Hotel in Zurich, Switzerland and the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation in Pittsburgh, PA. She is also a master print maker and has produced a successful line of floral chintz fabrics known as the Tjelda Collection.

Vander Meijden makes frequent trip to Europe, New Mexico, California, and Vermont to pursue her interest in plein air painting, while teaching painting, printmaking, and color theory in Charleston and Santa Fe. She is an out-of-state member of the California Art Club.
