What is Street Painting? Why Beaufort?

Street "painting" is an art that dates back to 16th century Italy. Artists would use chalks to transform ordinary village pavement into beautiful works of art. The tradition has lasted over 400 years and today is celebrated in festivals worldwide. Most notable is the International Street Painting Festival in Grazie di Curtatone, Italy where artists travel from around the globe to participate.

Beaufort is joining the band of international places to host an event featuring the unique art form of street painting. Recognized as one of the top small art towns in the nation by John Villani in his book "The 100 Best Small Arts Town in America", Beaufort is home to first-class gallery exhibitions and fun and free public events. "This event brings the two together. The sidewa1ks become the canvas and the event is the exhibition," according to event coordinator Marcia Spivey, "Chalk It Up is a new and fun way to celebrate the arts in our community."

More Event Fun!

In addition to the sidewalk art, guests can enjoy food and music. The Adventure Radio Group will be at the event conducting a live radio remote broadcast with on-air personalities Debbie Bolton from Oldies 98.3 FM and "Big John" from The Gator 104.9 FM.

The children's area will include chalking squares, a jumbo inflatable slide, face painting and balloon art. Featured artist Mary Segars will create a 110-foot mural alongside the former Bojangles property at the shopping center. The creation of the mural will begin prior to the event and event-goers can help complete the mural during the festival.

Chalk It Up is part of a larger event series, the Jean Ribaut Arts Festival to be held at Jean Ribaut Square over the coming year. All event activities will occur at lean Ribaut Square. 2127 Boundary Street.
