For over 26 years. Green Hill Center, has exhibited and promoted the work of North Carolina artists in addition to providing quality educational programs for children and adults. Last year, over 163,000 people either saw an exhibition or took part in a program organized by Green Hill. We are one of only a handful of museums in the country that combine exhibitions of contemporary art with an interactive gallery for families and an extensive outreach program. Our hands-on gallery, ArtQuest, brings families and children together to learn about making art.

All of Green Hill Center's exhibitions focused on the work of North Carolina artists from all parts of the state. The annual Winter Show is the most diverse, with work in every media from over 150 artists. NC's internationally known studio craft artists were showcased in a two-day Spring Event at "Select 2001" fine craft sale and fund-raiser. In May 2001, Green Hill presented a live and silent "Art Auction "with works by nationally acclaimed artists and art from private collections. Preeminent artists with NC connections participated including John Beerman, Jacob Cooley, Warren Dennis, Rebecca Fagg, Shane Fero, and Maud Gatewood.

One of Green Hill's most ambitious exhibition projects of the 2000/01 year was Rick Beck: Sculpture, a solo show by a renowned glass artist who lives in Spruce Pine, NC. A major exhibition, featuring 23 large-scale works of cast glass, Rick Beck: Sculpture traveled to the Montgomery Museum of Art in Alabama, and will open at the Glasmuseum in Ebeltoft, Denmark this Sept. A solo exhibition. John Rosenthal: The City by photographer and public radio commentator, John Rosenthal, opened alongside Beck's sculpture exhibition in September.

In 2000/2001, Green Hill served close to 164,000 visitors through onsite visits (41,991), outreach programs (19,500), traveling exhibitions (2,500), and an outdoor sculpture show (100,000 [estimated]). ArtQuest, reached over 35,000 visitors on-site.

Thanks to the community and foundation support, ArtQuest premiered a new series of exhibits in March of 2001, "Art Expedition".... inviting children to explore art from around the world. Visitors can build a Mexican dwelling at the Architecture Corner, "Mi Casa," paint and sculpt in "My Studio," and explore NC clay in the 'Covington Clay Garden." These exhibits and others, were created by NC artists, and provide children and families unique opportunities for creative learning through art.
