Center of the Earth Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Offers Works by Maggie Taylor

Center of the Earth Gallery in Charlotte, NC, is proud to present an exhibition of new work by Maggie Taylor, from Nov. 1 through Dec. 28, 2002. Taylor creates provocative images, transforming objects and artifacts into surreal and mysterious landscapes of the mind.

Taylor said the following about her work, "I wish to describe visually and through words the way in which our mythical (dreaming) and historical (remembering) selves intermingle. These photographs suggest narratives, yet allow the viewer to respond on an individual basis, bringing to mind personal associations and memories. My desire is for the viewer to experience a convergence of factual memory and fictional daydream similar to my own internal dialogue in creating the work. Many of these words and objects have a double edge, they feel familiar, yet remain enigmatic. My hope is for the work to be both playful and disturbing."

Paul Karabinis describes Taylor's work as "photographs [that] mesmerize us with their lush and radiant color, elegant design and illusive symbolism. Working from two and three dimensional arrangements, Taylor produces mysteriously symbolic pictures using traditional photographic means as well as computer-based imaging systems. In her enigmatic tableaux, miniature figures, objects, material fragments, and words are offered as visual equivalents of thoughts and memories."

Taylor received her bachelor's degree cum laude in Philosophy from Yale University and her MFA in Photography from the University of Florida. Over the past 15 years, Taylor has had well over one hundred solo and group exhibitions in the US, England, Austria, and Brazil. She was awarded an individual artist's grant from the Florida Arts Council in 1996, and in 1998 she was a winner in the New York City Metropolitan Transit Authority's Arts-for-Transit competition, which placed her work in subways throughout the system.

Taylor's work is in such collections as The Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University, The Art Museum at Princeton University, Musée de la Photographie in Belgium, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston.
