The Charleston Renaissance Gallery in Charleston, SC, Features Works by William Henry Johnson

The Charleston Renaissance Gallery in Charleston, SC, will present the exhibition, William Henry Johnson - Expatriate Visions, 1928-1944, from Nov. 1 through Jan. 15, 2003. This exhibition features 25 paintings and works on paper by William Henry Johnson (1901-1970), a homecoming for this Florence, SC, native, who grew to be one of the foremost international modernists of the twentieth century, a leading figure of the Harlem Renaissance, and an artist who brilliantly explored his Southern, African American heritage in different stages of his career.

The selection includes landscapes done in southern France in the late 1920s, several Norwegian and Danish landscapes, portraits, and still life paintings of the 1930s and early 1940s, focusing primarily on the development of Johnson's work as an expatriate in these countries.

This is the featured exhibition for the Fourth Charleston Fine Art Annual - Nov. 1-3, 2002, at The Charleston Renaissance Gallery.
