Spencer Art Gallery in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Deborah Palmer

The Spencer Art Gallery in Charleston, SC, is pleased to announce a special exhibition of new works entitled, Lowcountry Light, by Deborah Palmer, a relative new comer to Charleston and the world of fine art. The exhibit will be on view from Nov. 1 through Jan. 31, 2004.

Immediately after she earned her undergraduate degree in Fine Arts at Skidmore College in 1970, Palmer went out and build a successful career in commercial art. First as an art director in various New York ad agencies and then as a graphic designer and commercial illustrator - all while juggling a marriage, motherhood and a household which has always included two dogs and a cat.

During all this time, Palmer never gave up her love of drawing and in her "spare time", she'd pick up her pastels or paint in oils looking forward to the day when she could retire and devote full time to her art. That day arrived in 1999 when Palmer and her husband sold their home in Pelham, NY, and moved to Charleston.

Enchanted by the wonderful light, space, low horizons and big skies in the Lowcountry, Palmer has been pursuing landscapes often "en plein aire". She paints with the Charleston Outdoor Painter's Association (COPA) and continues to study with prominent artists in Charleston and New York to refine her skills and define her personal style. "I try to capture the essence of the scene, the atmosphere, the light, the moment in time," says Palmer. A sense of calm and timelessness pervades her landscapes.

In three short years, Palmer has become an exhibiting member of the Charleston Artist Guild, has won awards in the Guild's Signature Show and has had several pieces commissioned from local patrons. Her work has also been exhibited at Skidmore's Galleries, at Guild Hall in Easthampton, NY, The Art Center in Pelham and Sandpiper Gallery on Sullivan's Island, SC.
