Shain Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Offers Works by William Jameson

Natural Response, a new collection of energetic landscapes by William Jameson, will be on display at Shain Gallery in Charlotte, NC, from Nov. 5 - 30, 2004.

A South Carolina native, Jameson has studied art at the Ringling School of Art and the Instituto Allende, San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuanto, Mexico. A frequent traveler, Jameson paints a wide range of realistic landscapes, from the Carolinas to cities and towns across Europe. Throughout his career, Jameson has rejected the term "scene" as an adjective to describe his work which he defines as "explorations".

Combining knowledge and respect of nature, natural cycles and a love of history with a keen awareness of the relationship between nature and man, Jameson uses his brush and canvas to create a visual interpretation of land, sea and most importantly, "the space where land and sea meet and gradually shift and change." It is this constant movement in the natural order that fascinates Jameson most. His approach to nature as a subject results in landscapes that go beyond mere depictions of superficial beauty. Like a visual sleuth, Jameson explores his subject matter in great detail, revealing the mystery and power of nature. The effect is a literal and sentimental interpretation of nature and an acknowledgement of its sheer power.

As noted by David Houston, Chief Curator of the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, "Jameson's true purpose is not the direct representation of mountain streams, but to suggest the mystery of nature's hidden forces." While nature plays a large role in each of Jameson's paintings, he asserts that it is actually the element of light that is the center of interest in his works. Jameson states emphatically, "Without light the painting doesn't exist". In using the element of light to accentuate his use of color, Jameson masterfully creates what Screenwriter and Producer, William Dial, calls the "illusion of an ethereal element" in his landscapes. His paintings of the Tuscany Region of Italy are truly unique. In the words of Dial, Jameson's paintings capture the mood and atmosphere of the people and places of Italy "as if the air somehow infused the stones of the country with its own color". It is this ability to capture the essence of place and a particular moment in time that allows Jameson to invite the viewer in as an active participant, sharing in his impressions while being encouraged to freely contemplate each scene based on their own personal experience.

The recipient of many prestigious awards and honors in the United States and abroad, Jameson's paintings can be found in many public and private collections, including: Duke Mansion, Charlotte, NC, Wofford College, The College of Charleston, Presbyterian College, Clinton, SC, Medical University of SC, The Harbor Club, Inc. Charleston, SC, Carolina First Bank, Cryovac Corporation, Gibbes Museum of Art, Charleston, SC. and the United Stated Department of the Navy, Washington, DC.
