Sunset River Marketplace in Calabash, NC, Features Husband and Wife Show

A Marriage of Materials, an exhibit showing the works of husband and wife Scott Summerfield and Liz Zlot Summerfield will be on display from Nov. 1 - 30, 2004, at Sunset River Marketplace in Calabash, NC. Scott Summerfield works in glass while Liz Zlot Summerfield is a clay artist. Both incorporate metal into their pieces.

According to Zlot Summerfield, "The cycle of utilitarian objects is the impetus for my current work. I create some objects intended for use on a daily basis. However, I also create pieces that reference the form of a utilitarian object rather than its use, so I'm able to focus on the object primarily as a visual object. For me, this brings new meaning to an older existing form." She recently won Best In Show at the Fall Toe River Arts Show.

Glass artist Scott Summerfield works entirely in the abstract. There is not a vase, bowl or goblet among his pieces. Instead he creates sleek glass sculptures that are reminiscent of sea birds and other coastal themes. Greatly influenced by Harvey Littleton and the Studio Glass Movement in America, he says, "My process involves hand-blown parts which are later cut, ground, polished and assembled in the cold shop. Many of my ideas stem from my background of growing up on an island in Southeastern North Carolina."

The recently married couple met in 1997 at Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina and later attended the well-known Appalachian Center for Crafts together, where Summerfield studied Venetian glass art and Zlot-Summerfield explored ceramics and fibers. They currently live in Western North Carolina. Both work in studios they are constructing on their farm in Bakersville.

For Ginny Lassiter, owner of Sunset River Marketplace, putting this show together has been a labor of love. Scott Summerfield is her son. She recently said, "As a mother I'm incredibly proud of my son. As a gallery owner, I'm in awe of the talents of these two. Scott's glasswork shows a fluidity and sophistication that collectors of art glass are drawn to immediately. And Liz's pieces reveal an artistry that defies description. Her methods of glazing and burnishing have become a signature for her. Liz will be conducting a workshop here at Sunset River Marketplace, and we are all very excited about it."

Sunset River Marketplace features the artwork of more than 200 North and South Carolina artists. The 10,000 square foot gallery also offers art classes, workshops, children's programs and custom framing.
