Harold Crowell --Laura Craig McNellis

Signature Studio XI, located in Morganton, NC, is a program of the Riddle Institute, a nonprofit organization created in 1981 to support persons with disabilities in partnership with The J. Iverson Riddle Development Center. Artists participating in this exhibit include Sarah Britt, Harold Crowell, Laura Craig McNellis, and Brooks Yeomans. The mission of Studio XI, an internationally recognized model arts program, is to advance the careers of artists challenged by disabilities through programming, education and advocacy, demonstrating the strength and power of the creative spirit.

In 1993, Signature, the country's only home for artistically gifted adults who are challenged by developmental disabilities, was opened by the Riddle Institute. To complement the home, the Institute opened an art co-op and gallery for the residents. Painting, drawing, clay sculpture, jewelry making, and music are all implemented in the studios. The Studio XI program supplies art materials, equipment, studio space and any technical support needed for each artist's mode of expression.

Jim Moore

Jim Moore, of Granite Falls, NC, is a clinical psychologist who began working as a blacksmith three years ago. His art education includes classes at the John C. Campbell Folkschool where he studied under Elizabeth Brim, Allan Kress, Clay Spencer, and Dan Tull. His works have been exhibited at Blowing Rock's "Art in the Park", and Taylorsville's "Art in the Shop". Moore's artistic approach is very functional and artistic in design. This exhibit will include bouquets, candelabras, and tables, as well as a showing of some unfinished art and how it is made.

Richard Sinclair

Richard Sinclair, of Taylorsville, NC, and "Art in the Shop", has exhibited his works in numerous venues and events throughout the southeast. Throughout his career he has received numerous awards, honors, and grants, including a Merit Award for Leroy the Dragon from the 20th Annual Sculpture Celebration in Lenoir. Sinclair is a juried member of Full Circle Arts, a not-for-profit educational organization whose mission is to encourage public appreciation and education for the arts located in Hickory, NC.

Sinclair states, "As an artist, I work mainly with salvaged metal and stone in order to create art sculptures spontaneously contrived. Over the years, I have managed to salvage a large stockpile of metal and stone. This allows me to start a project with an open mind. I simply look over the disarrayed pile of parts and pieces around the shop and just let something create itself. The enjoyment or art comes from seeing the piece take on its own personality. I intentionally try not to make just stagnant art, but to capture an action, expression or movement using metal and stone, much as a camera would capture the flight of a bird. As far as being a welder, I'm not. I only have a basic knowledge of the tools of that trade allowing the creation of a sculpture not only be a creative process, but a learning process. The reward is when a piece of art invites the viewing public to stop and interact and hopefully stir their own creative thoughts."
