Hilton Head Art League on Hilton Head Island, SC, Features Works by Doris Shay

The Hilton Head Art League is pleased to present the exhibit, Here and There, a collection of watercolor and acrylic paintings by local artist Doris Shay, on view at the Art League Gallery in Pineland Station on Hilton Head Island, SC, through Nov. 19, 2005. The show includes scenes from the Lowcountry and places where she and her husband Willis have traveled.

Born in Canada, Shay and her family came to the United States when she was quite young. She attended West Virginia University where she received a Bachelor's Degree in Fine Arts. After marrying and rearing three children Shay returned to her art work and helped to promote the arts in Clarksburg, WV.

Watercolors are Shay's favorite medium. She produces wonderful paintings of flowers as well as still-lifes and landscapes. The paintings in this collection include subject matter from Provence, France, Victoria B.C, Northern Italy, and England, as well as scenes from Palmetto Bluff, Jarvis Creek Park and locations on and off Hilton Head Island. She gets much of her inspiration from the local scene, but never travels without her paintbrushes. A few years back, Shay painted a stunning watercolor of Savannah's Mercer House that was featured in the novel, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. The realism of her floral studies and the light-dappled landscapes make Shay's work truly special.

Shay has had many one-person shows, and her work can be seen regularly at the Art League Gallery and other Art League sponsored venues. She has been represented by a number of Savannah galleries, and was one of the first exhibitors at the Telfair Art Fair where she had shown her work for five consecutive years. Her studio is at her home in Indigo Run.
