Jerald Melberg Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Charles Basham and Donna Phipps Stout

Jerald Melberg Gallery in Charlotte, NC, is presenting two solo exhibitions including: New Pastel Landscapes by Charles Basham and Still Life Poetry by Donna Phipps Stout. Both exhibit are on view from Nov. 12 through Dec. 23, 2005.

Charles Basham

Ohio native Charles Basham has been making art for over thirty years and has enjoyed much acclaim throughout his career. This exhibit presents his stimulating and emotionally charged pastel landscapes.

Spending much time sketching outdoors, Basham has become attuned to the subtle changes in weather and atmosphere. In his pastels, the energy and impact of light is realized in harmonized color whose saturation and temperature have been pushed and raised beyond previous limits. In doing so, he has captured dramatic and compelling moments of morning and evening light over the farmlands of the Midwest and the marshes and beaches of the Lowcountry in South Carolina.

Donna Phipps Stout

Jerald Melberg Gallery is also presenting a solo exhibition of still life paintings by Kentucky native Donna Phipps Stout. Her atmospheric still lifes, which have garnered her many loyal and eager collectors, evoke a sense of poetic mystery. Stout's traditional representations of flowers, fruits and vessels arranged on linen-draped tabletops suggest that some kind of previous social interaction has taken place.

Stout says, "Sometimes I want the seemingly random arrangement of these imperfect objects to hint at the presence of someone or something just beyond view." The artist believes a good painting, like a good poem, should allow for investigation, not just observation.

Stout received her BA from Georgetown College and her MFA from Indiana University. She has been represented in over eighty solo and group exhibitions in the United States and Europe and was honored with a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts.
