The Prince Art Gallery Features Works by J. Christian Snedeker

The Prince Art Gallery in Charleston, SC, will present the exhibition, New Works by J. Christian Snedeker, on view from Dec. 1 through Jan. 20, 2007.

Snedeker can't directly pinpoint the beginning of his interest in art but he can tell you what inspired him to become an artist. "I don't remember what first interested me in art, but the event that definitely ignited in me the realization of the power of painting, and a desire to explore it, was the Andrew Wyeth retrospective exhibit at The Boston Museum in 1970," says Snedeker. "I was simply awed by the power of an artistic vision that sought to delve deeply into the reality of one man's world. It is this searching that compels me to put paint to canvas."

Snedeker attended the Boston Museum School of Art in the early 70's, where he studied painting, drawing, and photography. Upon completion of his studies the artist moved to Charleston, and began a career in furniture making, taking advantage of an opportunity that, while satisfyingly creative, largely kept him away from painting except for occasional periods.

Snedeker returned to a more intensive study of painting in the 90's. He joined the Charleston Artist Guild, and was welcomed into the art community with a "Best of Show" award at the 2001 Artist Guild's annual members exhibition. Snedeker adds, "I now divide my time between woodworking and painting. I am primarily exploring the Lowcountry landscape, with occasional forays to Florida and Martha's Vineyard."
