Somerhill Gallery in Chapel Hill, NC, Features Works by Herb Jackson and Louis Rubin

Somerhill Gallery in Chapel Hill, NC, is presenting two exhibits of works by Herb Jackson and Louis Rubin, on view through Nov. 11, 2006.

Herb Jackson

Herb Jackson's paintings are constructed in many layers of pigment, which are scraped off as they are being applied. Shapes and marks come and go as the painting develops to a hundred or more layers. Bold color and energetic application of paint to create a highly textured surface charge each of Jackson's abstract works with vigor and vitality. The final outcome is the result of a process of discovery similar to the life experience itself.

Jackson was born in Raleigh, NC, and graduated from Broughton High School. He received a BA from Davidson College in Davidson, NC, and continued his studies at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill where he received a MFA.

In 1999, Jackson was given the North Carolina Award by the governor. This is the highest civilian honor bestowed by the state. Jackson is also the 1986 recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts/Southern Arts Federation Fellowship, a 1984 North Carolina Visual Arts Fellowship, a 1981 SECCA Southeastern Seven Followship honoree.

Jackson's paintings have been featured in over a hundred one-person exhibitions in the US and in England, Peru, Portugal, and Canada. His solo exhibitions include galleries throughout the US and many museums such as the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art in Winston-Salem, NC; the Mint Museum of Art in Charlotte, NC; the Asheville Museum of Art in Asheville, NC; the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, DC; the Springfield Museum of Art, Springfield, MI; and the Oxford Gallery in Oxford, England. Critic Donald Kuspit included Jackson's paintings in the first exhibition of contemporary American art presented in the former Soviet Union. His work is in over eighty museum collections.

Jackson's work is featured in numerous public collections including the North Carolina Museum of Art; the Mint Museum of Art; the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill; the Hickory Museum of Art in Hickory, NC; the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Smithsonian Institute, Washington, DC; the British Museum, London, England; the Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland, OH; and the Whitney Museum of Art, New York, NY.

Louis Rubin

Somerhill Gallery is also presenting recent acrylics and watercolors by Louis Rubin. Well known as an award-winning author, who has written and edited over 45 books, as well as the founder of the famed Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill, Rubin also proves to be a talented painter.

Working in both acrylic and watercolor, Rubin's nautical works are based upon a long history of maritime observation dating back to the 1930's. With a direct simplicity of composition Rubin's technique of painting is charming as well as maritimely accurate. He is internationally acclaimed as an expert on Southern literature and history. Rubin uses his solid understanding of perspective and color to illustrate the harbors and seagoing vessels of the world. Rubin's literary accomplishments could fill many pages, and in the realm of visual art he has completed hundreds of maritime paintings.

Rubin holds both a Master's and a PhD from Johns Hopkins, as well as honorary doctorates from Clemson, UNC-Chapel Hill, UNC-Asheville, University of the South, the University of Richmond, and the College of Charleston.
