Plum Elements in Charleston, SC, Offers Three Exhibits for the Fall

Plum Elements in Charleston, SC, is pleased to showcase three exhibitions - appealing to function, fashion and form, including: Nov. 1 - Dec. 31 - Endless Line: Shapes in Steel, featuring the Charleston debut show of visionary sculptor and iron worker Marc Maiorana; Nov. 8 - Dec. 31 - Design Influences, featuring an exhibit of works by a third generation and award-winning jeweler, Lee Krombholz; and Nov. 15 - Dec. 31 - An Apple a Day, draws on this most iconic of America's fruits, featuring paintings and drawings by local artist Lisa Shimko.

Former Penland School of Crafts resident artist, Marc Maiorana is a studio artist, who brings grace to function and craft to art. His work is in the collections at the Minneapolis Institute of Art and the Horn Collection of Contemporary Crafts in Little Rock, AR. The works in the show illustrate how Maiorana's works in their core of utter simplicity cover a breath-taking range - being comfortable amongst both antiques and contemporary sensibilities. Maiorana will give a gallery talk on Nov. 1, 2007, at 6pm.

"I am completely enamored with the Charleston blacksmithing tradition. The elegantly simplistic shapes are just captivating," commented Lee Krombholz. The third generation and award-wining jeweler will exhibit his design, The Charleston Gate Bracelet, as well as other extraordinary jewelry and gems. Architectural details inspire many of Krombholz's designs. During his years of annual travel to Charleston he has recorded his inspirations via photography. Krombholz will give a gallery talk on Nov. 8, 2007, at 6:30pm.

The jewel tones of the apple have captivated local artist Lisa Shimko. From the rolling hills of Pennsylvania apple country, said to be planted by Johnny (Appleseed ) Chapman, Shimko like America grew up with apples. She developed a love of painting, drawing, and studying the history of the apple. The endless variety of shapes, sizes, colors, and symbolism holds a bottomless well of artistic possibilities.

Shimko's show, An Apple a Day, draws on this most iconic of America's fruits. Growing up eating apples in all its forms (except Johnny's hard cider) Shimko puts forth knowledge of our experience via apples - from the current signs of global warming in the orchards that prematurely bloom in winter to the ancient of the Pompeiians who deemed the apple an important aspect of a feast.

The exhibit features paintings inspired by the physical sensual yet utilitarian attributes of the apple, accompanied with stories, poems, and historical tidbits that motivated Shimko to share her ever evolving perspective of this all encompassing fruit. Shimko will give a gallery talk on Nov. 15, 2007, at 7pm.
