November Issue 2007

Providence Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Robert Brown and Paula B. Holtzclaw

Providence Gallery in Charlotte, NC, presents, Tidewaters, an exhibition of original oil and acrylic on canvas paintings by Robert Brown and Paula Holtzclaw. The show will be on view from Nov. 2 - 30, 2007.

Robert Brown

A South Carolina native, Robert Brown is a self-described, "outdoor painter". Drawing his inspiration from "the landscape we live in", Brown acknowledges our environment is ever-changing. In his landscape paintings, he does not attempt to record a single, particular moment. Rather, it is the subtle, yet significant changes in light, season, and weather that Brown captures on canvas.

Brown spent Sept. 2007 on the coast of Maine and Monhegan Island. He will have approximately twenty new paintings for the exhibition; these will be works done on location on the coasts of Maine and North Carolina.

After receiving his Bachelor's degree from Appalachian State University, Boone, NC, Brown then went on to earn his Master's degree from Wake Forest University, NC. He has also studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia. His work is included in many prominent private and public collections.

Paula Holtzclaw

Paula Holtzclaw has spent the last decade carefully developing her distinct style of realism. She has become especially renowned for her landscapes, celebrating the inherent beauty of the Carolina Lowcountry and the East Coast. Like Brown, Holtzclaw is drawn to the untainted landscape. Human interaction and the toll of industrialism on our surroundings is a recurring theme in her work.

Holtzclaw's paintings are included in numerous private and corporate collections throughout the nation; her work has been featured in publications including: The Charlotte Observer, Charlotte Place Magazine and Southern Anglers Journal. She has won awards and competitions including: American Women Artists: 2007 National Juried Competition, 2007 American Artist: 70th Anniversary Semi-Finalist, National Oil and Acrylic Painters' Society, "Best of America" 2007, 17th Annual National Juried Exhibit.
