Sunset River Marketplace in Calabash, NC, Features Works by Frank Capasso

Sunset River Marketplace in Calabash, NC, is presenting the exhibit, Expressive Forms and Colors, featuring works by Frank Capasso, on view through Nov. 17, 2007. The 20-plus pieces featured in this show include a series of acrylics with a musical instrument theme and a second group of colorful market paintings.

In an artist's statement about this exhibit, Capasso wrote, " Painting is an evolution leading to resolution. What happens in time 'is a lie that makes us realize the truth.' To strive for truth makes me understand the way more clearly, whether or not the goal for truth ever arrives. I see the elements of nature from the real to the unreal; from what I know to what I imagine; from what I feel to what I dream. I seldom imagine, neither feel nor dream the same way. . ."

Capasso's work has been selected for many juried shows and has earned a wide variety of awards throughout his career. Earlier this year, he received the 25th Anniversary Award from the Wilmington Art Association as well as a first place Oak Island Art Association award. In 2006, he was awarded first place at the Brunswick Arts Council show.

Capasso's work covers many subjects and styles, from figurative works dealing with female forms to both realistic and abstract pieces depicting his parents' home town village in Italy.

When asked about working in acrylic, he had this to say: "Acrylic is the most versatile of all media. It allows me to apply it in many advantageous ways. Depending on the composition, it allows me to use the pigment as a glaze or transparency, such as a watercolor. But, for the most part I apply it opaquely, either flat in color or as impasto, such as with oil paints. . . Acrylic is a spontaneous medium, and it suits my temperament. I enjoy painting quickly. As to color, I approach it intuitively. Depending on the composition, I adhere to the mood I wish to create, but it still is intuitive, changing every now and then."

Capasso received a BA in Art Education from Montclair University in New Jersey, and an MA in Fine Arts from William Patterson University, also in New Jersey. He was an adjunct professor teaching at history and drawing classes in Pennsylvania. After relocating to the Wilmington, NC, area, he taught at Cape Fear Community College until 2006.

Capasso, who works from his home studio in Belville, NC, produces work in acrylic, monotypes and mixed media. He also takes an innovative approach to embossed printing, which has been termed mixography.
In addition to painting, Capasso has been involved in theater work since college, and has performed in a number of comedy and dramatic roles. He was recently cast in the role of Grandpa Frank in the comedy "Over the River and Through the Woods" which as presented at Thalian Hall in Wilmington. Capasso serves on the board of directors for Brunswick Arts Council, and is president of the organization's performing arts division.
