Cabarrus Arts Council in Concord, NC, Features Several New Exhibitions

The Cabarrus Arts Council in Concord, NC, will present several new exhibitions including: Visible Spirits, featuring photographs of Mexico by photographer David Spear, on view from Nov. 10 through Dec. 19, 2008; Points of Origin: Cultural References, featuring a showcase of works by 10 artists of various ethnic backgrounds, on view from Nov. 10 through Dec. 19, 2008; and Shop Seagrove, featuring works by these Seagrove, NC, potteries: Avery Pottery and Tileworks, Cady Clay Works, Dirtworks Pottery and Donna Craven Pottery, on view from Nov. 3 through Dec. 22, 2008.

The black and white photographs of Visible Spirits, which have been published in a book by the same name, capture photographer Spear's time spent living and traveling in Mexico. Subtitled Nothing Is Ever as It Seems, the exhibit includes portraits of ordinary people - vagabonds, hairdressers, cane cutters, herdsman and day laborers.

A former newspaper photographer and editor, Spear has been a Guggenheim Fellow and was one of 20 artists to receive $10,000 fellowships from the North Carolina Arts Council in 2008. His work can be found in museums around the country, including the North Carolina Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Fine Art in Houston, the New Orleans Museum of Art and the Birmingham Museum of Art.

Points of Origin includes works in a variety of media by Raed Al-Rawi, Sharif Bey, Vadim Bora, Ann Van Every, Cameron Johnson, Raul Montero, Azhar A. Quadin, Susannah Ravenswing, Michele Tujuola Turner and Mona Wu.

Shop Seagrove will give gallery visitors the opportunity to view and purchase clay works from four of the most prominent potteries in North Carolina's famous pottery town: Avery Pottery and Tileworks, Cady Clay Works, Dirtworks Pottery and Donna Craven Pottery.
